MAMMOTH Scorching SPRINGS, WY – As the Yellowstone 150th anniversary methods in 2022, the park is functioning to have interaction with Tribes about possible actions to broaden tribal presence and illustration of their significant cultural heritage in the park for the duration of the anniversary and outside of.
Native People have been dwelling in and related to the landscape now recognised as Yellowstone for at the very least 11,000 a long time. Now, there are 27 associated Tribes who have historic and modern-day connections to the lands and sources now found within just the park.

The engagement we’re doing now will support set a much better basis for collaboration very well into the upcoming.”
The park engages Tribes on several undertaking proposals and initiatives and has worked intently with several Tribes on bison management and the latest transfer of Yellowstone bison to the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes at Fort Peck, Montana. The park also initiated a multi-12 months partnership with Native American Experiments faculty at Salish Kootenai University as they provide an exclusive understanding of the cultural worth of archaeological assets in the park.
Recent dialogue has centered on how the park can make improvements to partnerships with Tribes in telling tribal stories and doing work with them to broaden tribal existence and engagement inside the park beyond the 150th anniversary.
In April, the park invited all associated Tribes to a listening session where discussions centered on prospective actions and initiatives that Yellowstone and fascinated Tribes could collaborate on. A specific many thanks to all our Tribal companions who participated in these conversations.
In June, Superintendent Cam Sholly and park workers met with users from numerous Tribes and Tribal Colleges to even more the dialogue about strengthening the connection and producing a vision for the upcoming. The week provided a ceremony at the park’s North Entrance with a short-term installation of a Crow-style teepee. Tribal customers told the tale of the teepee’s origin and sang an honor tune.
