Avalanche on Going-to-the-Sun Road Traps Bikers

WEST GLACIER, Mont. [May 14, 2021] – On Thursday, May 13 at around 6:30 pm, Glacier Countrywide Park rangers responded to a report of bikers trapped at the rear of an avalanche close to Triple Arches on Heading-to-the-Sunlight Highway. 

3 bikers, a spouse and spouse alongside with a mate, touring up the highway encountered an avalanche throughout the street, turned all-around and begun back again down. Before long immediately after, they encountered a next avalanche in progress.  The wife was forward of her spouse and mate and read the avalanche. She warned her partner and buddy to cease. The avalanche arrived down amongst them, trapping the woman’s partner and mate on the uphill side.

“The unexpected onset of sunny and warm weather conditions on Thursday afternoon, put together with latest new snow from the earlier weekend, created unstable surface snow conditions,” explained USGS scientist Erich Peitzsch. “These conditions resulted in a wet, free avalanche originating previously mentioned the highway in Triple Arches that deposited debris on the highway.”  

Park officers established that they would wait around until the solar was off the slope over, reducing the odds for further more slides, right before beginning rescue makes an attempt. 

Rescue started around 9:30 pm. Rangers belayed across the avalanche chute and belayed the bikers separately again across the chute. No injuries were sustained by the bikers. All 3 bikers are from Bigfork, MT.
